Methodology

How the numbers are made,
and where they break

For each dataset on the data page: where it comes from, what Downstox does to it, how often it refreshes, and the known limits. The limits section is the point of this page, not a disclaimer bolted onto the bottom of it - it is what a journalist or librarian needs to decide whether to trust a number, and every limit stated here has been checked against the live code or the live source rather than assumed.

NIFTY 50 - PE, PB and Dividend Yield History

Monthly Price-to-Earnings, Price-to-Book and dividend yield for the NIFTY 50 index, India's headline benchmark of its 50 largest NSE-listed companies by free-float market cap.

Upstream source

NSE India's daily all-indices archive (ind_close_all_<date>.csv), with deep history originally sourced from niftyindices.com before it moved behind a login.

Transformation

Daily PE/PB/dividend-yield readings are grouped into one row per calendar month (the last trading day observed in that month) and served as CSV with no other adjustment.

Refresh schedule

Refreshed daily on trading days; each month finalises once NSE closes the books on it.

Known limits

  • The original upstream, niftyindices.com, now requires a login to serve this series (its API redirects to a Sitefinity sign-in page). Downstox now refreshes each index from NSE's own daily archive (ind_close_all_<date>.csv) instead; the deep history already stored predates that change and was not affected by it.
  • A month with no published P/B or dividend yield is stored as a blank cell, never as 0 - NSE not publishing a figure and NSE publishing a figure of zero are different facts, and the CSV keeps them distinct.
  • The refresh from the upstream source has previously failed silently for an extended period: one stretch in mid-2026 went five weeks before an internal alert on the refresh path existed. That alert is now in place, so a stuck refresh is caught rather than serving an old month indefinitely, but the series can still lag the calendar by a day or two while NSE's own archive catches up after month-end.
  • This series runs 1999-01 to 2026-08, 332 rows, verified live 23 Aug 2026 - the longest of the seven indices Downstox archives.

NIFTY BANK - PE, PB and Dividend Yield History

Monthly Price-to-Earnings, Price-to-Book and dividend yield for the NIFTY BANK index, NSE's benchmark of the most liquid, large-cap Indian banking stocks.

Upstream source

NSE India's daily all-indices archive (ind_close_all_<date>.csv), with deep history originally sourced from niftyindices.com before it moved behind a login.

  • This series runs 2003-09 to 2026-08, 276 rows, verified live 23 Aug 2026 - NIFTY BANK launched in 2003, four years after NIFTY 50, so it has no earlier PE to publish.

NIFTY IT - PE, PB and Dividend Yield History

Monthly Price-to-Earnings, Price-to-Book and dividend yield for the NIFTY IT index, NSE's benchmark of India's largest listed IT services companies.

Upstream source

  • This series runs 2005-07 to 2026-08, 254 rows, verified live 23 Aug 2026 - do not assume it starts in 1999 the way NIFTY 50 and NIFTY IT do.
