Index PE Percentiles: Where Each Index Sits in Its Own History
For each index below, this places the current PE ratio inside that index's own recorded history and reports the percentile it falls at, alongside the 10th, 50th and 90th percentile of the same series for context. The source data is the monthly PE, PB and dividend-yield series Downstox already publishes at /nifty-pe and gives away as CSV, current through 2026-08.
A percentile is a position, not a forecast. A high percentile means the current PE sits near the top of that index's own recorded range. It says nothing about what happens next. Downstox is not a SEBI-registered research analyst or investment adviser and publishes no price expectations; this report states where each index sits and leaves any conclusion to the reader.
The month counts here can be lower than the raw row count on /data for the same file. A published PE of exactly zero is the source leaving a month blank rather than a real reading, so those months are excluded from the distribution instead of being ranked as history. NIFTY MIDCAP 100 has two such months, August and September 2020; no other index covered here has any.
Tie convention. When the current reading exactly matches one or more historical months, it is counted as being at or above those months, not split between them. A month tied for the highest PE on record is reported at the 100th percentile. The 10th, 50th and 90th percentile figures use linear interpolation between the two nearest ranked months (the convention spreadsheets call PERCENTILE.INC).

How this is produced
Each index's percentile is computed against its own full recorded series only - indices are never compared against each other, and no index is compared against a period before its own series begins. Coverage differs by index: NIFTY 50 from 1999-01, NIFTY BANK from 2003-09, NIFTY IT from 1999-01, NIFTY MIDCAP 100 from 2005-07, NIFTY PHARMA from 2005-07, NIFTY FMCG from 1999-09, NIFTY AUTO from 2011-07. Months where the source published no usable PE reading are excluded from the percentile calculation rather than treated as a reading of zero.
